Spooks Series 5 Re-Watch
Missy and 12
dweomeroflight
Just in time for the film and all (ha ha... ha, ha!)

Anyway, I need to re-watch s5-7 for the second half of my fic Where All The Lost Spooks Go because tbh I'd forgotten a lot, especially 5-6. I'm going to leave space in the comments for my mini reviews and if others want to comment on an episode, please do!

I am commenting post Ruth leaving as I didn't start to record thoughts on the blog until now! Whoops :P Feel free to comment wherever though.

- Harry looking at Ruth's desk and seeing her image was kinda tacky. Sorry show.
- I liked the team work in this episode.
- Dodgy guy is so obvious guys. Come on Team. I liked his label of Adam as the 'Arab apologist' - there should be fic somewhere!
- This episode marks the beginning of the first big Spooks decline imo. Storylines have always been forgotten at the drop of a hat on Spooks, particularly ones relating to character, but it was often to the shows detriment. In this episode, Harry and the teams lack of reaction to Ros' actions in 5.5 feels odd as does Ros' dropping of the 'woe is me' attitude towards Harry. There could be many reasons for this. Alas, none are explored.
- This episode is kind of boring tbh

- Did Spooks do many two parters? There are two in series 5. IMO this one is better than 5.1/5.2 which felt like bad fan fic.
- The second half of this episode is really very good, especially Sally's brutal death
- I realized today that Sally and evil villain (I've forgotten his name already) perfectly parallels Ruth and Forrester. Forrester happened in 3.7 and this episode is 5.7. Sally is the new Ruth and is tricked by the mole operating within in her own house just as Ruth was with Andrew. The difference is Ruth was a born spook and escapes Andrew. Sally is less able and does not.
- I know the above is total coincidence because the writers on this show are consistent about being inconsistent, but damn, I like the parallel.
- I like the way the show tries to have everyone BUT the Muslims the villain of the week. Equal Opportunities Spooks.

- The first 20 mins of this episode is really boring.
- New cracks are showing: point one, how small the team has become post 5.5 with Ruth as moral heart of the grid lost at the same time as desk spooks with knowledge. Poor Jo has to become a desk spook
- I liked Harry's quip demanding to know if anyone had any information they hadn't obtained from typing the terrorist group name into google
- I actually quite like the Adam with PTSD over Fiona storyline, even if the Nanny is quite irritating
- One of the stupidest things about series 5 is that Adam stays on post 5.10 - surely Wes running away from home is an indication that Adam needs to quit the service and spend some time with his kid, let alone the unresolved PTSD
- I used to only like Ros 7.1 onwards, but damn she has great lines in series 5. I love her snide grins too.
- I like that you see she is becoming a Section Head replacement even in s5 - case in point, she goes in after Adam and beats the crap out of a bunch of military and starts having knowing conversations with Harry re getting back at people who piss MI5 off
- Rupert Penry Jones never impressed me as an actor but he is great this episode
